Maybe it was a pack of cards bought with pocket money. Maybe it was a favourite player, a team you lived and breathed, or that one card you kept tucked away because, somehow, you just knew it was special.

For Saber D’ Collectore, it started there.

With the thrill of the chase.

Long before spreadsheets, population reports, online marketplaces, grading companies and sales comps, collecting was about something much simpler.

You found something you loved.

You held onto it.

And you wondered what it might become.

THE OLD SCHOOL COLLECTOR

There was a time when collecting meant digging.

Trading cards with mates. Hunting through card shops. Searching weekend markets. Flicking through magazines. Talking sport. Making trades that sometimes made absolutely no sense to anyone except the two people involved.

There were no algorithms telling you what was hot.

No instant market price. No population report sitting in your pocket. You learned by looking, listening and getting it wrong. And that's where some of the best collectors were made.

Because collecting has never really been about simply owning things.

It's about knowledge, instinct, patience and passion.

THEN THE GAME CHANGED.

The modern collecting world is a very different beast. The internet opened the gates.

Suddenly, a collector in Australia could chase a card from America, compare sales from around the world, research a player's trajectory, study population reports, track trends and build a collection without ever stepping inside a traditional card shop.

The opportunity exploded.

So did the noise. More cards. More parallels. More releases. More grading. More hype. More investment talk. More people telling you what you should buy.

And somewhere amongst all of it, the original reason we started collecting can get lost - The fun.

We're not here to pretend collecting is what it was 30 years ago. We're here because it isn't. Today's collectore needs to be part historian, part detective, part market watcher, part gambler and, occasionally, part lunatic. You need to know your cards. Know your players. Understand scarcity. Recognise opportunity. Question the hype. Study the market.

And sometimes have the courage to back your own judgement when everyone else is looking somewhere different.

Because today's overlooked card can become tomorrow's chase. And today's “sure thing” can become tomorrow's cardboard coaster.

The occasional impulse purchase that seemed brilliant at 1:17am. We've been there. And we'll probably be there again.

Because we're not interested in pretending collecting is perfectly rational. It isn't. That's part of the beauty.

“What the hell was I thinking buying this?”

We've all been there. The important thing is that you get back on the horse.Or, in our case...back into the hobby.
